The track and field season offers distance athletes a wide variety of events to compete in. Typical distance runners will race the 400 meters to 3200 meters as their aerobic strength and speed development allow them to be versatile. Training typically starts up after the cross country break in November. Racing and scoring points in track is a bit different than xc as you want to earn more point so the team with the most points win. You earn point by placing in the top 3 position of your race. first earns 5 points, second earns 3 points and third earns 1 pt. those points per event are then added up to the whole team score in which there are a total of 16 events. Competitiors will typically compete in 1-3 races per meet depending on fitness level and the purpose of the meet. Meets are run on a all weather track that are standard among 99% of the schools which is 400 meters in length; so 2 miles or 3200 meters is 4 laps, 1600 meters is 4 laps etc. A great thing about track is that there is a wider variety of event to try and compete in. Unlike cross country their will typically be cuts and standards to be on the team and is established the the head coach. Try outs will usually occur in December.
